Retreat of Don Carlos into France.—
On the 11th of September, Don Carlos left the Spanish territory. The details of his flight are curious: As usual he did not make up his mind till the last moment, not believing Espartero was at hand till the firing announced his advance. At that sound Don Carlos tore his paper, abandoned his dinner, already smoking on the table, whilst the Princess Berna seized the holy standard of the Virgin, and both, hastily mounting on horseback, crossed the frontier, the French disarming their fugitive suite.
"The letter from our correspondent at Madrid, dated the 11th, states that the Spanish Chamber of Deputies has made the significant choice of Señor Calatrava for its President, he having 53 votes. Señor Zumalacarregui was the first Vice-President elected.
"The next step of the Cortes was to vote unanimously an address to the Queen congratulating her on the late events in Biscay and Navarre expressing the most lively gratitude to Espartero for his conduct throughout in terms the most flattering to the General's character and talent."
The previous successes of Espartero had occasioned great joy in Madrid.
The Madrid papers of the 7th and 8th ult. mentioned that rejoicings of every kind are going on in the Spanish capital, in celebration of the success of the constitutional cause in the North. On the evening of the 7th the corps diplomatique waited on the Queen Regent to present their congratulations. Mr. Eaton, the American Envoy, delivered a congratulatory address to her Majesty in French, to which she made a suitable reply.
The Paris Minister at Madrid announces that the King has conferred the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor on General Espartero, and has sent to him Captain Folz, one of Marshal Soult's aides-de-camp, with the insignia.
