Full Text

We have some doubts, whether the Democratic Press is not mistaken in asserting, that the King of Spain has agreed to the Florida treaty, and that it is in this country, to be laid before Congress. The reason for this doubt is, that by the constitution of 1812, no part of the Spanish empire is to be alienated without the consent of the Cortes—and that they have even claimed an interference in some treaty with Holland, because it was made some time since without their consent. We have not yet seen any account of the Florida treaty being acted on by the Cortes.

doubts about the treaty being agreed without cortes consent

Event Details

The Democratic Press asserts that the King of Spain has agreed to the Florida treaty, which is to be laid before Congress in this country, but doubts exist because the constitution of 1812 prohibits alienating any part of the Spanish empire without Cortes consent, as they claimed interference in a prior treaty with Holland made without their consent; no account yet of the Florida treaty being acted on by the Cortes.
