A canoe with two men carrying one hogshead and a tierce of rum from Greenwich to this place was overset by a squall of wind near Connecticut. Both men initially got on the bottom of the canoe, but Aulger was washed off by the swell and drowned. Bowen held on through the night despite waves breaking over him and was picked up by a boat from Newport in the morning.
