Full Text

NEW-YORK, Jan. 15. Last Saturday night, a number of men belonging to the 16th regiment, quartered in this city, made an attempt to cut down the Liberty-Pole in the fields, by sawing off the parts round it, and afterwards attempted to blow it up, by boring a hole in the pole, which they filled with powder and set fire to it; but all their endeavors were in vain, the pole being so well secured with iron they could not penetrate it, so that they could not accomplish their design. They then sallied forth in a furious manner, with bayonets drawn, upon a small number of gentlemen (who were standing near the house of Mr. Montanye) when they entered the house, after having destroyed all the front windows; one of the Soldiers made a thrust with his bayonet at a person, which he parrying with his hand, only received a slight wound in the forehead; after which some of their officers interposing, they retired to their barracks.
