Sundry people have enquired what a democrat is? Writers have divided all simple governments into three kinds; -- monarchical, where a king, or other despot, is sovereign; aristocratic, where the nobles govern, and the common people are nothing; and democratic, in which every citizen has an equal suffrage and equal privileges, and the constituted authorities are the people's agents. Such is the species of government in these United States.

We have neither despot nor nobility; and every citizen who wishes to preserve the purity of our constitution is a good democrat.

General Washington, when he retired from the office of President, solemnly cautioned us against party and local prejudices. How has this caution, which is enforced by every consideration, been regarded?

We are loudly called upon by the state of public affairs, to show ourselves firmly determined to support government-- to respect the constitution-- and to be decided Americans. What nation ever flourished in a state of anarchy? Where was liberty ever enjoyed equally from highest to lowest without a good government?
