Belle Isn't in a Hurry

PORTLAND, Ore (UPI) - Belle, the 10-year-old, 2½-ton elephant at the Portland Zoo, has been pregnant for 18 months. She still was pregnant this morning.

Since last Thursday, officials have been expecting her to deliver the first baby elephant born in this country in 43 years.

Last night, they took an electrocardiogram. It determined that Belle had a pulse of 30 to 38 heartbeats a minute, and the unborn baby had one of 60, indicating it is ready for delivery.

That, apparently is about all it determined. Officials kept waiting. But Belle didn't appear to be in any hurry.
