—During the long winter evenings at this season of the year, the people of this place will not be without entertainment of some kind. Just read over the programme for Christmas week: Monday night, a rehearsal in preparation for the festival; on Tuesday night, Christmas festival at the church; Wednesday night, singing school at Farr's hall, taught by Mr. Clisbee of Guilford: Thursday night, lyceum at the same hall; Friday night, an assembly at which they "trip the light fantastic toe," and on Saturday evening—rest for the weary. Count in a grange meeting once in two weeks, a scientific lecture as opportunity favors, and the programme for the season will be nearly complete. The singing school and the lyceum will be held weekly. The lyceum is well sustained. At the first one about one hundred persons were present and the meeting lasted till after ten o'clock. Business as well as discussion occupied the time. Question: Resolved, that the West offers greater inducements to the young man at present than the East does. At the second lyceum about one hundred and thirty persons were present. An interesting essay was read by T. N. Robertson. The Evening Journal, a spicy, interesting, instructive paper, was well read by the editors, Mrs. Larkin D. Farr and Mrs. Murray Davis. The following question furnished a lively discussion for the evening: Resolved, that any further immigration of the Chinese to the United States ought to be prohibited by national law.
