CONTEMPORARY OPINION.
No Distinction of Persons.
From the Doylestown Intelligencer.

It would be most appropriate and salutary that Mr. Carlisle should be taught a lesson. He is no more than an American citizen. Others are no less. The law regards all alike. Lawbreakers, be they secretaries or treasurers or tramps, stand on a common footing. When they get outside the law they have no standing that others are bound to respect. An application of the law to Mr. Carlisle in his individual capacity, in connection with his doing what other people cannot do, would tend more to the vindication of American citizen sovereignty and the maintaining of our institutions before the world than any incident since the impeachment trial of Andrew Johnson.
