The Campaign in Illinois.
SPRINGFIELD, Ill, July 28. The Hons. J.
R. Eden, W.H. Van Epps, Gustavus Van
Hoorebeke, W. W. O'Brien, and J. C. Rob-
inson, were in the city today, and bring re-
ports from all parts of the state to the effect
that the democracy are actively at work in the
cause of the Union, and that they are mak-
ing converts from the radical ranks by scores
and hundreds.
The democracy here were encouraged by
the presence of their candidates, and an im-
promptu meeting was resolved upon. The
hall of representatives was obtained through
the courtesy of Gen. George W. Smith, state
treasurer, after an application made to an-
other state officer had been repulsed. A
fine band was procured, and the democratic
gun brought out; and the first thunders of
the latter had hardly ceased to reverberate,
when the hall was crowded with democrats
anxious to hear the chosen champions of
their cause. The Hon. John R. Eden ad-
dressed the meeting, in a speech of great pow-
er, and was followed by the Hon. W. W. O'-
Brien, who spoke with his characteristic elo-
quence. The meeting, which was very en-
thusiastic, continued until a late hour, and
adjourned with three cheers for the national
and state tickets.
