L. A. DODGERS READY AXE FOR WALTER ALSTON

NEW YORK (UPI) Walter Alston's days as manager of the last-place Los Angeles Dodgers are numbered unless the club does a complete change and starts winning during the next 10 days. United Press International learned Monday on excellent authority.

Charley Dressen, now a Dodger coach, appears owner Walter O'Malley's choice as Alston's successor although Leo Durocher and Bobby Bragan also are under consideration.

Dressen won two pennants during the three years he managed the Dodgers in Brooklyn but was let go after the 1953 season when he demanded a two-year contract.

If the Dodgers do not show considerable improvement during the next 10 days, a new manager is almost certain to be named around the time the club returns to Los Angeles, Aug 8 according to sources.

"That recent vote of confidence the Dodgers gave Alston was tantamount to handing him his hat," the sources asserted: "O'Malley already has decided to make a change and he's debating among three choices - Dressen, Bragan and Durocher."

All three are popular on the West Coast. Dressen and Durocher make their homes in California. Dressen and Bragan both managed successfully in the Pacific Coast League during recent years.

"Durocher might prove too hard to get," the sources said. "Bragan is in the Dodgers' farm system at Spokane and could be brought in easily. But Dressen is right there with the club and O'Malley still thinks highly of him despite their past differences, so he looks like the logical man."

If and when Alston is relieved as manager, he will be offered a job in the Dodger organization. He managed in the Brooklyn farm system for eight years before being promoted to Dodger manager.
