ORANGE WANTS NEW HAVEN TO HELP BUILD BRIDGES.
Will Give Some Land For a New Boundary—What is Said About the Matter Pro and Con.
Notice has been served on the town of New Haven by the town of Orange that the legislature will be petitioned to have the boundary line between the two towns changed. The line now runs northerly from the railroad bridge in the middle of the channel of the West river. The town of Orange wants the new boundary line run in the middle of West river south of the railroad bridge. The boundary in this direction is now so that the West river from this point to its mouth is in Orange.
The objective view in the petition is to divide the expense and maintenance of bridges across West river between New Haven and Orange. As it is now the bridges south of the railroad bridge are in Orange and must be kept in repair by that town. It is expected that a new drawbridge will be ordered by the United States government across West river at Kimberly avenue, and doubtless Orange has this in mind in the boundary petition. The suburban town does not feel inclined to bear all the expense of such a bridge. As some put it: "It is willing to cede a portion of its worthless territory, consisting of swamps and marshy land, to New Haven, if only it can be saved the expense of this bridge as well as the expense of repair and care to other bridges in the locality." On the other hand the town folks say the land is not worthless, but has a value now and a much greater prospective value.
The town of New Haven will oppose the boundary change before the legislature.
