Let's Give Nome
Children A Break!
In a not-so-long-ago radio address,
Governor Ernest Gruening
made a plea to citizens of Alaska
for a "break" for Alaska's children.
The Nome Committee of the
Alaska Commission on Children
and Youth is making a plea at the
present time to citizens of Nome
to give Nome's children a "break."
This "break" will be helped along
by every Nome citizen who backs
up with his cooperation the local
committee on plans for needed
recreation.
As Governor Gruening stated,
"If we are going to establish the
American way of life in Alaska as
an effective answer to the police-
state tyranny that is firmly en-
trenching itself on the other side
of Bering Strait, and prove by ac-
tions that we know our system to
be better, we can no longer delay
in giving
our
youngsters
the
"break" which should be every
child's heritage.
"We are all aware that all
our Alaskan communities have
been short of recreational facilities
for the youngsters . . . If the
American idea means anything, I
am sure it means that each gen-
eration of Americans wants to do
a little better for its children than
it was done by. It should mean
that each succeeding generation
shall have the benefit of all the
opportunities
for self-develop-
ment that have been achieved by
our society."
Article IX of The
Children's
Charter, of the White House Con-
ferences on
Child
Health
and
Protection, resolves:
"For every child a community
which recognizes and plans for his
needs, protects him against physi-
cal dangers, moral hazards, and
disease; provides him with a safe
and wholesome place for play and
recreation; and makes provision
for his cultural and social needs."
