From the Petersburg Times of Monday.
RAIL ROAD SURVEY.
We understand that a letter has been received by the Mayor of Petersburg, from the Secretary of War, in answer to the application of the Common Hall of this town to the President of the United States to permit one of the Engineers of the Government to survey the Route for a contemplated Rail Road from this place to the Roanoke River, stating that such are the engagements of the Corps that it is impossible to comply with the request immediately; but that it would be placed on file, on a footing with similar applications, and receive attention as soon as practicable.
We further learn, that in consequence of this disappointment, it has been determined by the Committee of the Hall, to take the necessary steps to procure an Engineer at the expense of the Town; and that, with this object in view, one of their body has addressed a letter of enquiry to the President of one of the most prominent Rail Road Companies at the North.
