STORY OF HAITI
Ben T. Reidy, Who Served With Marines on the Island Denies Alleged Atrocities.
Ben T. Reidy, who held a second lieutenant's commission during the war and who at the close of the conflict was commissioned captain, told Rock Island Kiwanis club today what the U. S. marine occupation had accomplished for the Island of Haiti. Mr. Reidy said that, although he spent 13 months on the island and was there at the time atrocities were said to have occurred, he did not see them.
A non-partisan senate committee, he said, had made a thorough examination of the alleged atrocities, and reported that the marines had accomplished a good work in Haiti.
He predicted that in 10 years the island will be rendered safe for residence and for investment.
Haiti, was the spot, Mr. Reidy said, where Columbus first landed in the year 1492.
Gerald Means of the Phelps Light & Power company and Carl L. Burnside of the Schlegel drug store were introduced as new members.
The club received an invitation to attend a picnic to be given near Dubuque, Iowa, on Aug. 10, by the Dubuque club.
