NEW YORK, July 8.—The police of the Oak street station had trouble in rescuing a live cat which some facetious person had dropped into a mail package box. The case was reported to Lieutenant Daly, who called the postoffice authorities on the telephone.

"Some one has put a live cat in the package box which stands in front of 359 Pearl street," he said. "Will you send a man to release the cat?"

"Yes," answered the man in the postoffice. "Can we have the cat? There are lots of rats here."

"You bet!" was the answer. A postoffice employee released the cat and took it to the postoffice, where it will fight rats for Uncle Sam.
