Extract of Letter from Roseau, in Dominico,
dated the 2d Instant.
"On the 23d:ult. about an hour after Sun-
set (one of the Darkest rainy Nights I ever
remember we were alarmed with the River
having broke its Banks ; in a few minutes
the whole Town was under Water and about
twelve Houses, with their Inhabitants and
Merchandize, swept into the Ocean: All the
other Houses and Stores were filled with Wa-
ter, and each person trembling with Expec-
tation of their impending Destruction, from
whence there appeared neither Alternative
nor Retreat.
The torrent was so rapid, it
was impracticable to go from House to House.
Mr. Gould's new House. M. Judah's Store,
on the Bay. Captain Sawyer's House, and Bal-
thazer Le Blanc's House: are among those
carried into the Sea. with every Thing that
was in them. In this horrid Scene, about 30
People were lost. Our loss here is computed
at 80,000l. Currency. in Houses and Merchan-
dize carried away ; and in the several other
Parts of the Island, to very near as much. a
Our general Distress here is proportionably
greater by the Inundation; than yours by your
late dreadful Fire."
