Express Their Gratitude in Council At Rice Lake Sunday
The Indians gathered at Rice lake for the annual Rice harvest and a council at the north end of the lake Sunday, at which, in no uncertain terms they expressed their appreciation of the work of Senator Sharp at the last session of the legislature in introducing and securing the passage of a bill that closed Rice lake to all hunting until after the rice had been harvested; that gave the Indians the exclusive right to collect rice on the lake, and that prohibited the changing of the water level by any public or private agency so as to interfere with the growth and maturing of the rice. The bill was read at the council and a resolution passed expressing the appreciation of the Indians for Senator Sharp's work in their behalf.
Previous to the council a paper had been circulated among those at the lake expressing the same thing, and was signed by about fifty members of the band there. The circulation of this paper was stopped as soon as the council, which was attended by about 200 Indians, had passed the resolution unanimously.
