Age Limit Is Raised
Washington, D. C.—Government age limits on the hiring of skilled workers are being lifted to speed the national defense program it was announced.
Rules under which 48 years had been set as the maximum age for new employes in the navy yards are to be relaxed by the Civil Service Commission, and at the same time yard commandants are to be given authority to rehire retired mechanics now out on pensions.
Other changes being put into effect include extension of the work-week to 48 hours in many of the yards, but with time and one-half rates above 40 hours. Employes will also be allowed to work during their annual leaves, if the emergency requires, and draw their vacation pay plus regular wages.
