Economy minded members of Congress Tuesday focused their fire on a new target - the U.S. Department of Labor. Funds to operate the department for fiscal 1958 had already been cut by the House Appropriations Committee, but in action before the full House of Representatives a barrage of amendments inflicted even deeper cut-backs.
The offices of the labor secretary and solicitor, the Bureau of Labor Standards and the Bureau of Veterans Reemployment Rights were early casualties as the House chopped nearly a million dollars from the proposed budget.
Only the Bureau of Apprenticeship, which sets up industry and labor-financed apprentice and journeymen programs, survived the economy drive.
Toledo Area Congressman Thomas Ludlow Ashley helped direct the fight to prevent what he described as "crippling blows to a program which has won the respect and support of industry and labor alike."
He said that expanded apprenticeship training is essential if skilled workers are to be produced to meet the future demands of national security and our peace time economy.
Congressman Ashley told members of the House that "the efficient carrying out of government operations and intelligent investment in America's future is sometimes the soundest way to effect real economy."
