[McKinney Enquirer.]
On Tuesday evening last, a son of Mr. Dutton, aged about twelve or fourteen years, and living about two miles southeast of town, drowned himself by jumping in a well, where the water was about twelve feet deep. The following are the particulars as near as we could glean them: The little boy it seems, in a freak of mischief, had thrown at and wounded a pigeon near the house. Upon being reprimanded by his mother he made some defiant reply. She said that she would tell his father when he came home and have him corrected. He replied that she would not; if she did he would jump into the well and drown himself. She said nothing more but continued her house work. Being near a window she looked out and saw her child standing near the well gazing down into it. She turned her head, about her work, and in a few moments looked back, and saw that he had disappeared. She immediately ran to the well, but could render no assistance. She called to her husband who was in the field near by, and when he came it was too late to save the child. Grab hooks were procured and the body drawn up. Those who assisted in dressing the body say there was no bruises of consequence on the body, the supposition being that he received no injury in the fall, but drowned, the water being about twelve feet deep, and the bottom jugged out in shape of a cistern.
