Kiwanis Club Protests Appointment of J. W. Ladd
Action is Taken by Luncheon Club at Regular Meeting Friday Afternoon; Declare That Citizens Want Resident as Postmaster
The features of the regular bi-monthly meeting of the Kiwanis Club held at the Claremont Hotel Friday afternoon were resolutions passed protesting the appointment of J. W. Ladd of Abbeville as postmaster here to succeed Major J. Wesley Bradford, and a short address by C. E. Jones of Batesburg, chairman of the state highway commission.
The resolutions in regard to the appointment of Mr. Ladd as postmaster follow:
"Whereas, it has been brought to the attention of the Kiwanis Club of Sumter that Mr. J. W. Bradford, postmaster at Sumter, has resigned that position, and
"Without previous notice to the public that Mr. J. W. Ladd of Abbeville, S. C., has been designated Acting postmaster, in his place, and
"Whereas, Mr. Ladd has never been a resident of Sumter, and is a stranger to the people and business interests here, while there are in Sumter many citizens who are competent to discharge the duties of Postmaster, and
"Whereas we understand that the appointment of a stranger is not in accordance with the usual custom of the Postoffice Department, now, therefore,
"Be it Resolved, That we believe it to be to the best interests of the City of Sumter, and to the Postoffice therein, that a citizen and resident of the city hold the office of Postmaster: that we protest against the appointment of a stranger to that position, and that we respectfully request that the office be filled by some competent resident and citizen of this community, who is in better position to give to the people the service they have a right to expect from the Postoffice.
"Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to our United States senators, with the request that they take steps to further the wishes of the community in this matter."
Another set of resolutions tendering thanks to citizens who have done much towards establishing a successful tobacco market in Sumter this year were passed. They are as follows:
"Whereas the tobacco market is this year being conducted in Sumter on a plane that promises prosperity to the community, and permanency to the market: and
"Whereas, a great lot of hard and unselfish work has been done in the last many months to bring about this condition, and
"Whereas this club recognizes that the thanks of the community are due to those who did such work, therefore
"Be it resolved, by the Sumter Kiwanis Club that its congratulations and thanks are hereby tendered to John A. McKnight, R. Brice Waters, Walter C. Boyle, W. E. Pratt and S. O'Quinn for their untiring and successful efforts. And further, as these have been aided in varying degrees by so many men of Sumter that all cannot be named here, to each and all who have worked in this cause the "well done" of the club be extended."
Mr. Jones made a very interesting talk on road building work now underway in South Carolina. He stated that $37,000,000 would be spent this year in building hard surfaced roads. On January 1, he said there were only about 400 miles of paved roads in the state, but that within the year this mileage would be doubled.
