PROVIDENCE, FEBRUARY 27.
Friday last the Birth-Day of the illustrious WASHINGTON was celebrated in this town with unusual splendour, and with testimonies of that hearty patriotism which has ever distinguished the citizens of Providence. The weather was unfavourable to parade, but it could not prevent the public sentiment from exhibiting itself in those demonstrations which prove that the affections are interested. Those whose age or habits prevent them from joining in the usual active and public transactions of festive days, did not refuse, on this occasion, to bear testimony to the importance of the day which gave WASHINGTON to the world.
The United Company of Artillery fired a Federal Salute from Weybosset-Bridge, and the company of Cadets, under Col. BOURRILL, enlivened the day, and at the same time did honour to themselves, by their military precision and attention to orders.
In the evening the State-House was brilliantly illuminated by the Artillery Company, where a numerous assemblage of citizens were gratified with a choice selection of music, performed by several members of the company, and a few other gentlemen, who assisted on the occasion.
The Coffee-House was illuminated by the Cadets, where they partook of an elegant supper, and expressed the fervency of their feelings on the occasion by the following sentiments:
1. The President of the United States; the successor of WASHINGTON.
2. The Vice-President---May he contemplate the character of Washington, and copy his virtues, one by one, till he makes them all his own.
3. The Congress of the United States---May they always bear in mind that Washington was a member of the first Congress.
4. The Civil Officers of the United States---While they reflect that WASHINGTON was a magistrate, may they emulate his disinterested patriotism.
5. The Officers of the army of the United States---They will consider that WASHINGTON is their General.
6. The armed Citizens of the United States---May they reflect with pride that WASHINGTON is a soldier.
7. The people of the United States---may their gratitude accompany the cheering idea that Washington is their fellow-citizen.
8. May liberty and justice pervade the whole human race, Since the dignity of our nature is advanced by WASHINGTON's being a member of the grand community.
9. The 11th of February, 1732; the day that gave Washington to the world.
10. The 4th of July, 1776---May we never forget that it was the word of Washington which gave energy to the memorable Declaration.
11. The Secretary of State---He was appointed by Washington, and his official conduct has attested its high derivation.
12. Every grateful heart which celebrates the day of Washington's birth.
13. WASHINGTON---May the mouth of his calumniator be drawn up like a miser's purse.
14. The grateful sensations of this anniversary will forever speak confusion to the Kentucky sentiment, that jealousy is the proper basis of a free government.
15. May the Company of Cadets emulate the steady perseverance of the United Company of Artillery.
16. The Fair of Providence---May they reward patriotism where it exists, and create it where it is wanting.
The Ball at Ammidon's was, as is usual on this anniversary, attended by a numerous assemblage of ladies and gentlemen.
In all the principal towns in the Union, from which we have heard, the Birth-Day of Lieut. Gen. WASHINGTON has been celebrated with great and uncommon marks of veneration and esteem for that exalted character.
