Walter Nathaniel Ridley, head of the department of psychology at Virginia State college, probably became the first known Negro to receive a doctorate from a state-supported Southern university when the University of Virginia awarded a Doctor of Education degree to him Monday, June 15.
A native of Newport News, Va., Dr. Ridley maintained a straight "A" average in all courses except one. For that one, he earned a B+ average.
Besides his outstanding academic record at Virginia, Dr. Ridley was initiated into Kappa Delta Pi honor society for professional leaders in education.
A graduate of Howard university, the VSC psychologist later earned his Master of Arts degree there. He then did graduate work at Ohio State university and the University of Minnesota before transferring to the University of Virginia in the fall of 1951.
