New York (LPA)—All three of New York City's major baseball clubs were flatly accused of "company unionism" here last week by the American Baseball Guild, first trade union in the history of the pastime.
The Giants, Yankees and Dodgers managements were charged with violation of the State Labor Relations law by the ABG at a preliminary hearing of the state Labor Relations Board. ABG Organizer Robert Murphy declared that the three clubs "have interfered with. restrained and coerced the players in their rights to form, join or assist the American Baseball Guild or any other labor organization."
Formation of players' committees by the major leagues last summer violated the state's Little Wagner Act" prohibiting company unionism, he contended. "The clubs thru these committees told players what organizations to join and formulated plans for a company-dominated union.
Murphy's action, coupled with announcement that organizing work would definitely be pushed, proved that club owners had not succeeded in burying the Guild with epithets and intimidation as they tried last summer. The hearing here is slated to continue on Nov. 1.
