POET'S CORNER.
From the London General Advertiser.
A NEW SONG.
Sung at a Musical Society.
The Music by G. BRETT,
The Words by T. BROWN.
Is here the God of Music doth invite
His sons, to crown with pure and soft delight;
'Tis here ambition drops her tyrant wand in hand;
Whilst love with friendship lead us hand in hand;
'Tis here the God of Wine his clusters bring,
And thus the Gods command their sons to sing.
With concord, ye sons of Apollo unite,
Since Bacchus hath join'd us, let discord take flight;
Soft music, when mellow'd with juice of the vine,
Elates th' whole soul, and makes Gods more divine.
CHORUS.
Since music and wine
Give raptures divine,
Our voices we'll raise to the sky
The Gods with one voice,
Declare us their choice,
And wisdom we all defy.
Apollo and Bacchus hath charms, when apart,
To sooth ev'ry grief, and to cherish the heart;
But firmly united, I swear by great Jove,
They enrapture the soul with transports of love.
Since music and wine, &c.
Sweet music, the heart of a soldier doth cheer,
When cannons do roar, he's a stranger to fear;
Tho' thousands lie dead at his feet on the plain,
'Tis music enlivens those hearts that remain.
Since music and wine, &c.
Then fill the high bumper, ye sons of the Nine,
And quaff the rich goblet, the liquor divine;
For hark! the loud trumpet, uplifted by fame,
Your friendship, your worth, and your merits proclaim.
Since music and wine, &c.
