Full Text

Bristol, July 29. Last Tuesday Mr. George Marshal, an Officer of the Customs at Plymouth, (who lately prosecuted a noted Jew, and seiz'd a great Quantity of adulterated Snuff in his Custody at London,) paid a Visit among the Snuff Venders in our Fair, and, with the Assistance of Mr. William Allport, one of the Tide-Surveyors, seiz'd in the Pithay, from John Williams, 18 Bladders of adulterated Tobacco Snuff, weighing three Quarters of a Hundred and 12 lb. and at the Lodgings of one David Jeffuran, a Jew, at the Sign of the Chatham Man of War, in Merchant-street, four Casks, one earthen Pot, one Sieve, one Mill, 120 lb. Weight of Tobacco Dust, Sand, Putick, and yellow Oaker, a Compound to be manufactur'd into Snuff, with all the Utensils for making the same. The Jew is gone off, and several other illicit Traders in this Commodity have also thought fit to disappear for fear of a Prosecution, the Penalty for every Pound of Snuff so adulterated, being 3l. as specify'd in the Statute. 'Tis to be hoped this will open the Eyes of our Retailers in this Commodity, as well as the Takers of it, and make them cautious how they either buy or take such adulterated Mixtures for real Tobacco; and for the peculiar Service the above Gentlemen have done in this Affair, to this City, the Right Worshipful the Mayor has return'd them his Thanks.
