CHICAGO, Sept. 8. (AP) - At least 80 were killed and
100 injured when a Chicago and Northwestern train from
Madison, Wisconsin, ploughed into a local train from Elroy,
Wisconsin. The Elroy train was discharging passengers
at the Cortland street station, four miles from downtown,
when the Madison train ran into it. The last two
coaches of the Elroy train telescoped and in them most of
the deaths and injuries occurred. Both trains were composed
of wooden coaches and filled with passengers coming
from holiday outings. None of the Madison train were
killed. Acetylene torches and axes were used in cutting
out persons which the wreckage pinned down. The first
body taken from the debris was a two year old child.
One of the coaches and revealed an
arm of a one year old child, the leg
of a man and the arm of a woman.
Seven hundred and many standing in
the aisles were aboard the Elroy train.
The northbound train with its headlight
blazing brightly was said to have
been abreast of the train when it
struck. That was given as the cause
of the Madison engineer not seeing
the Elroy train.
