The "Tinglers" and the "Besanters" are an accomplished fact, and these euphemistic nicknames represent the respective supporters of Mrs. Tingley and Mr. Besant in their rival claims to the leadership of the Theosophist movement.
The betting is with the latest American arrival for Mrs. Besant's oscillating conditions have rather fired her, and her adherents in England have diminished to about a score.
Mr. Besant has just succeeded in converting the great virtuosa of the solo violin, Miss Maud MacCarthy, who a year ago was presented by admiring Irishmen with a $12,000 violin on which she declared she would rather part with her life than her instrument, but against that Mrs. Tingley can show the Hon. Nan Ino Herbert, a woman of fabulous wealth who will one day be Baroness Lucas of Dingwell, one of the few British women of the peerage.
She is quite young and her enthusiasm for her new faith is of the same great dimensions as her rent roll.
The "Tinglers" have recently taken to striking their triumph in the neighborhood of Mr. Besant's apartments and that lady, annoyed beyond all measure at the sorry spectacle of her waning powers, has retired for a time to the continent. In the meantime, Mrs. Tingley is making arrangements for a grand coup.
