Full Text

Melancholy Suicide.-This morning at about 5 o'clock, Mr. Joseph E. Stickney, of the firm of Brown, Lawrence & Stickney, merchant tailors, Old State House building, left his home, telling his wife that he was going to the store for the purpose of writing a letter, which he said it was important for him to attend to at an early hour. Two or three hours elapsed when Mrs. Stickney became anxious in consequence of his not having returned. A message was sent to the store, but it proved that no one there had seen him during the morning. His family and friends were now quite alarmed concerning his safety, for he was well known to have been predisposed to insanity. It was but Saturday morning last that he arrived in this city from California, where his fortune had been to secure a very handsome share of the riches of that country. A general search was therefore entered upon in every quarter of the city, and the result was that about 10 o'clock this forenoon the dead body of Mr. Stickney was found in the back bay. It seemed that he had proceeded from his residence out on the Providence Railroad, and on arriving on the bridge, took off his overcoat, tucked it under the timbers, plunged himself into the bay, and was drowned. The body was conveyed to the dead-house, and Coroner Smith will proceed to hold an inquest over it. Mr. Stickney has left behind an amiable wife, who has not yet been informed of his fate. It will be a sad tale to her.--Boston Times.
