Samuel P. Abbott, late master of the brig Rebecca, denies rumors in democratic newspapers that Capt. Dacres of the Guerriere endorsed his ship's register with a challenge to American frigate commanders. I have seen a publication in a great number of democratic newspapers, saying that my register of the brig Rebecca of Boston, was endorsed by Capt. Dacres, of the Guerriere frigate, with a challenge for the commanders of the American frigate, to meet him and have a tete-a-tete for a few minutes.—I aver that all publications, saying that my register was endorsed, are false, and none but such low characters as privateersmen or Jacobins would assert such a downright falsehood; they are capable of saying anything to deceive; and by deception they expect to support their most righteous cause of exterminating commerce, and ruining the mercantile interest of the country.
My register was not endorsed, nor did Capt. Dacres write anything on any of my ship's papers; nor send any challenge by me whatever.
And I repeat that all assertions of that kind are false, from whatever quarter they may come.
SAMUEL P. ABBOTT.
Late master of brig Rebecca.
