Thursday, April 5, 1804.
From Washington, March 20.
"The President has communicated to Congress, this day, the letter of Capt. Bainbridge, stating the loss of the United States frigate Philadelphia, wrecked on rocks near to Tripoli, as she drew off the shore after giving up the chase of a Tripolitan cruiser. The frigate put into 17 fathoms water, in chase; and struck on rocks not laid down in any charts. Every exertion was made to get her off, without success; and the crew, being above 300, have become prisoners, or perhaps slaves, in Tripoli. Lieut. Benjamin Smith, of Rhode-Island, an active and meritorious officer, is one of the captives. The President recommends an additional appropriation, in order to enable him to increase the forces of the United States in the Mediterranean."
