One of Chicago's Ex-Aldermen Shot Down
in a Saloon.
CHICAGO, Ill., Oct. 27.-Ex-Alderman
William P. Whelan was shot and fatally
wounded at 3:30 o'clock yesterday morning by George H. Hathaway, a
gambler. The shooting occurred in Matt
Hogan's saloon, at 334 State street.
Whelan died at the Michael Reese hospital at 2:30 in the afternoon. The
shooting was the result of a trivial barroom fight. Whelan was eating breakfast when Hathaway came in to
pay for a check he had left behind a few days before. Seated at
the table with Whelan were Matt
Hogan and John McGuinness, a city
employee. Hathaway saw Whelan and
walked over and spoke to him. Whelan
glanced up at the gambler, and said he
did not want to know him. Other words
followed, and Whelan followed Hathaway
who backed against the door screen. McGuinness and Hogan both took hold of
Hathaway. Whelan then tried to strike
Hathaway with a heavy cane. Hathaway
pulled a revolver and fired. The murderer was arrested the same afternoon.
