NEW-YORK, August 24.
I was yesterday asked, says a correspondent, why it is that the printers give us no more news?--I thought the question rather bordered upon simplicity, but, as it was a fair and plain one it merited a reply equally ingenuous. The reply naturally suggested was that they have none to give you. All that is worthy the public or individual notice they retail weekly, which has lately been, and there is appearance will still continue to be. Indian affairs--Rogue-Island injustice and perfidy in their late tender act and penal law with the consequences already taken place-the grumbling of Massachusetts yeomanry on account of their heavy taxes, &c. Many pathetic and ingenious performances have been dealt out to you at different periods upon the grand and all important subject (so far as it relates to the political wel being of this country) of the federal requisition--but to what avail! might they not as well preach to stocks and stones! for it is not the simple conviction of the propriety of any particular measure, but the carrying of it into execution, that will bring about the good designed. Do you not remark that we are hourly falling into disgrace, and this solely for want of those powers required by Congress to levy the impost--and to regulate the trade of the states--and for want of a general reformation of manners!--Are you not yet convinced, that ALL the evils complained of by every state in the union, result immediately from the want of proper powers in the great federal head of the nation! O, ye unbelievers, how long must we bear with you!--That arm which rescued you from slavery-and established you an independent people--would still entail to the posterity of this western clime the inestimable blessings of freedom--and ye will not! As well may you expect to behold a huge Camel shooting through the eye of a needle as America happy or Safe without a FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
