No Time Wasted in Preliminaries—Over One Thousand Delegates Present—A Business Meeting from the Word Go.
Special to the Light,
Dallas, May 5.—Convention reassembled at 3 p. m. yesterday, appointed the usual committees, and listened to a strong speech by Hancock, of Austin, who was followed by Cochran, of Dallas, and Jackson, of the Farmers' Alliance. The committee on credentials made their report by senatorial districts, and seated the delegates, 1117 in number. Committee on permanent organization reported, and report was adopted, making Hon. D. C. Giddings permanent chairman; Will Lambert, C. R. Lane, A. A. Bell and Houston as secretaries, and a dozen gentlemen from various sections of the state as vice presidents. The president elect addressed the meeting and was followed by Melvin Wade, (colored) whose address was enthusiastically cheered. The committee on address could not report and the work of issuing an address to the voters of the state was put upon the executive committee, of which Hon. Geo. Clark was chosen chairman. Hon. Roger Q. Mills reported a series of resolutions laying down the platform on which the fight should be waged. These resolutions will be given to the people of the state in regular form.
