HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Municipal golf course here will be opened to Negroes one day each week providing Negro citizens show enough interest, it was announced Friday.
Jimmy Walker, city alderman who heads the parks and playgrounds committee, said the plan was agreed to during the meeting with Negro leaders earlier this week.
Under the plan, Negro leaders headed by Dr. H. F. Drake, will determine how many Negroes are interested in using the course. If there is a sufficient number $10 yearly membership will be sold, the tickets being good for Mondays only.
Walker said that if 25 to 30 memberships can be sold, this will be a sufficient indication that the golf course can operate profitably on the days it is used by Negroes.
Dr. Drake said the proposal was approved by his committee of 12 persons. He estimated that memberships or commitments from approximately 50 persons can be obtained before the group reports in two weeks.
"We are all very pleased with this," said Dr. Drake, a practicing physician and son of the president of Alabama A. and M. College. "I think it represents evidence of good will in Huntsville and all of us. I think, need some evidence of this sort."
