Northeast Oklahoma 100% BRT Property

MIAMI, Okla.--The Northeast Oklahoma Railroad is a 100 per cent BRT property—and it has been right along.

Since 1937, the BRT has held the agreement representing all operating employes -- engineers, engineers' helpers, conductors and brakemen—and, with few exceptions, the property has been 100 per cent BRT all the time. There are 38 employed.

"Because of the fluctuating business on this property, many of our members are furloughed from time to time and I personally know that many of them never terminate their membership although it would be their prerogative to do so," said General Chairman H. E. Cantrell.

"On many occasions, when furloughed employes are returned to employment," he added, "those who had terminated their membership would call on some committeeman or the collector and request application in the Brotherhood. The same thing has followed when the carrier hired any new brakemen.

"I think this is unique, in that we do not have the union shop or check-off agreements in effect on our property and under the circumstances the benefits of either would be obvious. Can any property equal this?"
