London, July 15.—Mr. Pitt's Monument.—The monument to be erected in the Guildhall of London, is in a state of great forwardness. This exquisite piece of sculpture is the production of Mr. J. G. Bubb, of Grafton-street, Fitzroy Square. The massy substance on which the figures in this composition are placed, is intended to represent the Island of Great-Britain, and the surrounding waves. On an elevation, in the centre of the Island, Mr. Pitt appears in his robes, as chancellor of the exchequer, in the attitude of a senatorial orator. At the wings, on the immediate fore-ground, two erect statues characterise his abilities; with national energy, which is embodied, and riding on a symbol of the ocean in the lower centre; they assist to describe, allusively, the effects of his administration. Minerva is on his right, overcoming anarchy, thereby securing internal repose to the country. Mercury is on the left, as the representative of Commerce and the patron of policy. To describe the unprecedented splendor of success which crowned the British navy, while Mr. Pitt was minister, the lower part of the monument is occupied by a statue of Britannia, seated triumphantly on a sea-horse: in her left hand is the usual emblem of naval power, and her right grasps a thunderbolt, which she is prepared to hurl at the enemies of our country.
As the place assigned in Guildhall for the monument of Mr. Pitt is immediately opposite to that erected to the memory of the illustrious Lord Chatham, the artist has taken care so to construct the pedestal, mouldings, breadth, elevation, and architectural parts of his design, that, in the points of dimension and outline, it may serve as a companion to the monument already executed to the father of the illustrious Wm. Pitt.
