MARIETTA, Ga. - Two well-known Atlanta ministers were injured here Friday night about 8:15, when the car in which they were riding was struck from the rear by a trailer-truck at the intersection of the four-lane Highway 41 and Clay Street.
They were Dr. Harold I. Bearden, pastor of Big Bethel AME Church and president of the Connectional Council of the AME Church and Rev. Samuel H. Giles, professor of Church History, Turner Theological Seminary and assistant pastor at Big Bethel.
Dr. Bearden was rushed immediately to Harris Memorial Hospital and was admitted for medical care around 9 p. m. Saturday, his physician described his condition as "fair." Rev. Giles sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
Patrolman Owens of the Marietta Police Department, who investigated the smash-up, identified the driver of the trailer-truck as Robert Lee Hendricks, of 2777 Flat Shoals Rd., Atlanta, who is employed by a steel supply company on Decatur Street, S. E.
HEADED TOWARD ATLANTA
According to Patrolman Owens, both the trailer-truck, a 1955-model White, and the automobile, a 1954-model Chrysler 4-door sedan, were headed toward Atlanta. Approaching the intersection, Dr. Bearden stopped his car for a traffic light and the trailer-truck crashed into his car from the rear.
Patrolman Owens estimated the damages as approximately $700 for the automobile and $100 for the trailer-truck. No charges were booked against the drivers.
The prominent Atlanta ministers were returning home from the North Georgia Annual Conference of the AME Church, currently in session at Turner Chapel AME Church, Marietta, Ga.
The Atlanta Daily World learned from authentic sources Saturday that three trailer-trucks were traveling on Highway 41. According to these sources, Dr. Bearden not only had to stop for the traffic light, but also had to wait for one of the trailer-trucks to clear the intersection. It was then that his car was struck from behind by the second trailer.
