Full Text

Extract of a letter to the Editor from Somerset county, Pennsylvania.

Yesterday was a great day in Pennsylvania. The whigs have made the most desperate efforts that could be made. Men and money were used in every way that either could be made profitable. Our district was made the especial object of their notice, as ours is the only democratic district in the county, and they almost moved heaven and earth to carry our township; but the sterling democracy of Addison were true to their trust, and we carried the election by a majority of 15. From the returns received up to this time, the signs are favorable. The majorities are all decreased from the vote given to Markle. The reports from Fayette say Shunk's majority is 700. If true, it is a large increase since the last governor's election.
