Noble Generosity.—The New York Evening Post states that during the late fire in Sacramento city Thomas Hunt Esq., of the firm of Hunt & Co, New York, distinguished himself for his timely benevolence. Before the fire was stayed he had placed a check for one thousand dollars in the hands of the Mayor, to be applied for the relief of the sick and destitute, after dispatching his boat at an early hour to San Francisco, for provisions and succor.—She returned immediately with a full freight of merchandise, and a donation of eight thousand dollars worth of goods, paid for from his own resources, which brought relief to hundreds in great distress. After the fire, for some days, no charge was made on his steamboat for passage to the Bay for sufferers, and no less than five hundred persons were transported free to their friends, or the shelter so nobly provided.
In addition to this, he ordered his officers to keep open house for all who sought food, by which means many persons were saved from suffering and starvation. This was a use of his wealth which will win him the lasting gratitude of his fellow Californians, and the respect of mankind, wherever his deeds are made known.
