verses inspired by theatrical representations seldom have a merit higher than may be involved in grace or adroitness of personal compliment, but the following thoughtful and suggestive lines by an American in Europe whose contributions had found favor here before - may claim credit for a certain heroic excellence no less than for the presumed justice of their tribute to one of the most beautiful and virtuous women upon the English stage
JOAN OF AR
Mrs. Wyndham Rowe at the Queen's Theatre
London.
Within the place of a weird magician.
Where witching fancies dwell.
The olden centuries showed a strange sweet vision
That wove a wondrous spell
And there, from village hours and girlish prattle,
Beneath the swaying vine.
To field of onset and the roar of battle
And grim cathedral shrine,
From Domremy to Rouen's miserere.
Through swiftly changing full scenes,
We followed all thy footsteps sad and weary.
O maiden of Orleans.
Until thy guerdon waited, and up higher
Thy "voices" bade thee come,
And, aureoled, through the scarry way of fire
Their chariot bore thee home
Twas but a vision, yet with lessons laden
Beyond a sated hour.
That mystic life-work of a hallowed maiden.
Those years of prayer and power
The chosen ones who crimson history's pages
Though ease-loved and envied.
Saw ever pointing onward down the ages
The bleeding hand of Christ
In dark of torture saw the eternal morrow
Beside the wondrous throne
But, shining through the anguish and the sorrow
A glorious starry crown
By cross or fagot, haughty frowning tower,
"The day n,h martyr stand.
But in the shadow rotte tark Justa- cower",
