Remodeling of the Espee station at Bisbee Junction, the establishment of quick passenger service from Bisbee Junction to the various parts of the Bisbee district by Pullman type buses, and the elimination of dangerous grade crossings was the result of a conference between Paul Shoup, executive vice president, and J. H. Dyer, general manager of the Southern Pacific and the transportation committee of the Bisbee Chamber of Commerce Thursday.
The conference was the result of negotiations started several months ago by the transportation committee, after a survey of transportation service conditions in the district. Informal conferences had previously been held with Assistant General Manager A. E. Sweet and Assistant Traffic Manager Eugene Fox, which resulted in the preparation of a letter to Shoup which was presented at yesterday's conference.
The letter asked for six specific improvements.
Vice President Shoup took up each item and gave the transportation committee of the chamber definite answers as to what the railroad company would do in each instance. He said:
1. That the railroad company would remodel the present station at Bisbee Junction: that A. E. Sweet, assistant general manager would prepare plans for the new station and confer with the committee as to their acceptability. That the railroad would put in curbed and graveled platforms around the station and that an electric lighting system would be placed in operation.
2. That the railroad company would establish a fast bus line with adequate facilities for the transfer of passengers to and from Bisbee, Lowell, Warren and Bisbee Junction; and a truck line for the transfer of baggage, express and mail.
3. That the officials of the road would undertake a solution of the problem of adequate telephone connection with Bisbee Junction.
4. That the traffic department of the railroad would undertake the allocation of more Pullman space to Bisbee, both east and west.
5. That the Bisbee agent would be given control of the entire Bisbee district, including the station at Bisbee Junction.
6. That the railroad would erect an overhead crossing at the cut east of Bisbee Junction, and would work with the supervisors in the establishment of a new road to connect with such crossing. That the railroad would bear one-half of the grading cost of moving the highway south of Courtland from the west side to the east side of the track.
Dyer also stated that train No. 103, "The Argonaut," west bound, would be transferred to the south line, leaving Bisbee Junction between 4 and 5 p. m. each day and arriving in Los Angeles at 9:45 the next morning. Train 11 will be transferred to the north line. The transportation committee agreed to assist the railroad in the discontinuance of trains 7 and 8, the Tucson-Douglas local.
Both Shoup and Dyer, together with Sweet and Fox, assured the traffic committee that they were anxious to give the Bisbee district the best service possible. They told of their appreciation of the importance of the Bisbee district as a shipping point, and their realization of its service needs.
