Extract of a letter from general Arnold, dated Montreal, May 28, 1776.
I have only one moment to acquaint you I am well, though much fatigued, having this morning returned from an expedition 15 leagues above this, at a place called St. Anne's, where we have lately had near 500 of our men made prisoners, by a number of regulars and savages. You will see a particular account soon of the agreement I have made with them or exchange of prisoners. I never was more mortified in not having it in my power to revenge the cruel and perfidious treatment of our enemies. Humanity forbade the step; and though I had a sufficient force, my hands were tied."-
