Isaac Lake, Father of Ira Lake, Charges Woman With Second Degree Murder.
The fatal shooting of Ira Lake, 43 year old former Chesapeake officer, which was described as a probable suicide by Coroner Dr. W. Wilson Lynd, has taken a new turn, with the body of the victim in the grave only a few hours.
Monday night Mrs. Opal Lake, wife of the dead man, was arrested on charges of second degree murder which were sworn to in an affidavit filed by Lake's father, Isaac Lake.
The woman was taken into custody by Deputy Sheriff Harry M. Shattuck at her home in Chesapeake and was brought to the court of Magistrate Peter A. Burke.
Mrs. Lake entered a plea of not guilty to the murder charges, and she was released after furnishing bond of $1,000, pending action of the Lawrence County Grand Jury.
The body of Lake was buried in Rome cemetery on Monday afternoon.
Wife Denies Shooting
With the filing of the murder charges, the case takes on a perplexing aspect. On his deathbed, Lake, in the presence of newspaper- men and members of his family and police, said that he shot himself because "I had grown tired of living."
Mrs. Lake told officers that her husband shot himself, coming into her room at one o'clock last Saturday morning. She said he fired two shots at his head but missed, and then fired another bullet into his abdomen, after leaving the room.
Lake was taken to St. Mary's hospital in Huntington, where he died after an operation, in an effort to save his life, was performed by Dr. W. N. Rowley of the hospital staff.
