LA FOLLETTE REFUSES TO HEAD PRESIDENTIAL TICKET
BOOSTING DEBBS
Chicago, July 14.—The newly born unnamed third party went into session here shortly after 10 o'clock today with the announced intent of selecting a candidate for the presidential campaign. Extreme radicals were boosting Eugene V. Debs for nomination. The conservatives were still hopeful that Senator La Follette might head the ticket.
Chicago, July 14. The new third party will function without the guiding hands of leaders of the committee of forty-eight, it was learned from the highest authority today. It was also learned that Senator Robert M. La Follette has refused, through his representative here, to become the party's presidential nominee. These developments resulted from the American labor party finally maneuvering itself into complete nomination of the situation with the apparent anchoring of the party to an ultra radical program. The barrier was reached in an all-night meeting of the leaders of the laborites and forty-eighters, which broke up at 5 o'clock this morning.
Chicago, July 14.—The amalgamated liberal convention, after a morning of parliamentary jockeying to hold the delegates in session while the platform committee worked in an eleventh hour effort to write a new platform to satisfy La Follette, adjourned at 11:50 this morning until 2 o'clock. It was expected that the platform would be reported then. The convention decided to adjourn following an announcement from the conference committee that a complete new draft was being prepared. Frank J. Esper, secretary of the labor party, said the platform would be acceptable to the conference committee of liberal groups in convention here. They have finally agreed to a common platform, according to a statement by Frank Esper. He said it would be acceptable to Senator La Follette.
Chicago, July 14.—The convention of liberals reconvened at 2:13 this afternoon prepared to receive the platform and begin balloting on the presidential nominee. The committee of forty-eight issued a statement explaining its position on the proposed platform and asserting the laborites sought a radical platform based on the principles of British Guild socialism.
