QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

What is the Reason of Mr. PITT's Resignation?

That remains to be solved by Time.

Q. 2. Is it on account, as some will tell us, of his ill Health?

The Answer is short... No body can blame him then.

Q 3. Is it because he was not suffered to prosecute those Measures which he judged might be of service to the nation?

No body can blame him?

Q. 4. But is there not another Reason (which, perhaps, is a true one?) Mr. Pitt knew that the Treaties for Peace were to begin afresh.

His Virtue, his Popularity, (for to that even Virtue is not indifferent) might not permit him to depart a little from his deliberate resolutions on that point.

Q. 5. Has he not deserted his Country, then, by Resigning?

He is still at liberty to take care. Ne quid detrimenti capiat Respublica. He may still, and will be—The Dictator of the People.

Q. 6. How! Has he not Resigned?

His Office, not his Power. The Power that raised him to serve. I had almost said save his Country, yet remains....for there is yet an House of Commons.

Q. 7. But has he not accepted of a Pension?

Yes...out not as a Pensioner. That never can be.

Mr. PITT was never avaritious, and he is very, very rich. He is out of debt. and contented with a little.

A Reward. bestowed rather on his family than himself : bestowed by his King for real services done to his Country. He, who would not sollicit, is blamed for not refusing.

Q. 8. And has not his Lady obtained a Peerage?

Yes.

Q 9. And will not his Descendants be thereby ennobled?

No....but by Virtue and Patriotism. Pray Heaven, they may not disgrace the Commoner?

Q 10. But why was not Mr. PITT himself made a Peer?

This Question was never put ; but, if it were, see the Answer to Q. 5 and 6.
