Lunch Counter Protest
San Francisco. - Assemblyman Phillip Burton (Dem.-S.F.) announced passage of H.R. 35 today, wherein the California State Assembly supported the lunch counter demonstrations in the South.
Assemblyman Burton stated after passage of the resolution:
"This act by the California Assembly clearly demonstrates that the majority of our California legislators support the efforts of the young southern intellectuals and college students and their courageous and dignified effort to break down the Jim Crow barriers that exist in the South."
The vote approving the resolution was 42 to 15. Those supporting the resolution included 33 Democrats and 9 Republicans. Those opposing the resolution included both the Republican floor leader and the Republican caucus leader.
The resolution (see enclosed) introduced at the request of Terry Francois. President of the San Francisco Branch of the NAACP placed California's legislature as the first in the nation to give official moral support to the lunch counter demonstrations.
