Full Text

Col. William R. King, just nominated for Vice-President, has been in Congress longer than any man now remaining there except Henry Clay. He has taken pay for more than thirty years service, mainly in the Senate, where he has held a seat for thirty-two or three years past, less the time that he was abroad, securing the emoluments of a Foreign Mission. We have been trying to remember anything he has said or done in all this long career, which should raise him above the dead level of an ordinary tax-consumer—which should entitle him to the admiration or gratitude of his countrymen. Our effort has been unsuccessful. We know that he helped through the Constructive Mileage of the Senate last year by certifying that it was correct, though he evinced his conviction that it was not so by declining to receive it himself. But what decided good he ever did or attempted we cannot discover. Yet we call this an age of Progress and Reform!
