BARTER ISLAND, Alaska, July 27-(P)-A handful of soldiers who call themselves the "loneliest guys in the world" did a double-take here Sunday when 18 girls stepped from a Ladd Field C-47 supply plane.

The girls, all Civil Service Employees at the big air force field near Fairbanks, were brought on a special excursion flight to this barren treeless island in the Arctic Ocean 300 miles east of Point Barrow.

The soldiers man communications and navigational aid stations on this blob of rock, sand and snow off the rim of the continent 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
