Full Text

Thursday evening there fell one of the severest storms of rain, accompanied with wind, thunder, and lightning, that hath ever been remembered; which hath done considerable damage in several places. It continued raining with little intermission from 5 o'clock till past 11, at which time it poured down Highgate-hill in such a manner that the road could not be crossed with safety; and yesterday morning all the flat part of the road at Holloway and fields adjacent were overflowen. And about 1 o'clock yesterday morning the water came down in such torrents from Hampstead, &c. that the road and flat fields about Bagnigge Wells were overflowen; the water rose upwards of 8 feet perpendicular above the usual height of the drain, & was near 4 feet above the foot bridge at that house. The pleasure gardens, cellars, and out-houses belonging thereto were overflowen, and several of the pales broken down by the violence of the stream.

Three young men were surprised by the flood sleeping in an out-house, said to belong at Tile kiln, two of whom were drowned; their bodies were found, and taken to the Blue-Lyon-Alehouse in Gray's-Inn-Road.

Thursday night the serpentine river in Hyde park overflowed its banks (occasioned by the great quantities of rain that fell that day and in the evening) and the inundation was so violent that it filled the lower parts of the houses near the bridge at knights bridge to the height of six and seven feet with water, washed down one house and the poor woman that lived in it is missing, and damaged several others. The waters continued so high yesterday as to prevent any one passing: AND A NUMBER OF CARTS WERE EMPLOYED FOR THE CONVENIENCY OF CARRYING PEOPLE THRO' THE WATER; GREAT DAMAGE IS LIKEWISE DONE AT CHELSEA BY THE SAID INUNDATION.
